What to Do if You Suspect Hail Damage on Your Roof

Larry Walty II • August 19, 2022

Hail damage is not as extensive or as recognizable as storm damage and can be easily overlooked by an inexperienced eye. That is until leaks and other related problems make themselves known at a later time. If you’re unsure whether or not your roof has sustained hail damage, you should err on the side of caution and assume that it is. Larry Walty Roofing & Guttering Inc. share a quick guide to what you should do if you suspect hail damage on your roof.

Document the Damage

Your homeowners’ insurance provider may cover the costs of roof repair, so you will need to document the damage as much as you can. Take your phone and make sure you have both photos and videos of the following:

  • Hailstone samples.  Hailstones will melt and disappear, so make sure to take photos of hailstones on the ground. Bring a tape measure or common measurable objects like coins or standard-sized batteries, and put them in the shot along with the hailstones that you found.
  • Roofing.  Modern smartphones have enough resolution that should allow you to take clear pictures without climbing the roof. If this is not an option, use a ladder to climb to the roof’s edge – but don’t try setting foot on your roof. Make sure you have someone assisting you with the ladder from the ground if you don’t have safety gear.
  • Your home’s exterior.  In addition to the roof, take pictures of other damaged areas like the deck and siding, as well as other items of value on your property.

Call Your Roofing Contractor

You need a roofing contractor present when your insurance provider’s representative inspects the damage caused on your roof. Your roofer will assess the extent of the damage to your roof and provide a roof repair estimate, both of which will be needed by your insurance provider. Your roofer will also be your advocate and help streamline the process for you.

After your claim is filed and approved, your insurance provider will release two checks to your roofing contractor. The first check will cover the down payment for the roof repair – your roofing contractor should schedule repairs after cashing it. The second will cover the remaining approved amount after deductibles.
