Every property is laid out differently, which means no two decks are the same. While this gives you the flexibility to design virtually any deck, it’s way too easy to go overboard. Larry Walty Roofing & Guttering Inc. takes a look at the basic elements of good deck design.
1. Continuity. Decks are typically built around existing houses. Unless you’re building your home together with your deck, you should take design cues from the house to create continuity between the two spaces. The deck should look like it’s been planned to be part of the house. Your design cue can be the house’s color palette or the cladding material used for the exterior walls. The house may have some motif, pattern, or ornamentation that can be incorporated into the deck design.
2. Foot traffic. Your deck can help direct foot traffic through your home, or away from certain areas if that is what you desire. Your deck design can create emphasis on the areas that you want to showcase and create partitions or gates that separate your home’s more private areas. Railings can help direct foot traffic away from areas where landscaping may get accidentally trampled on.
3. Features. Decks are far more than just platforms set in your yard. You can incorporate features that will let you enjoy the things that you do. For example, if you often host gatherings for friends and family, you can have an outdoor kitchen that includes a stone grill, a cooktop, and a service area complete with a refrigerator and sink. If you happen to have a beautiful view overlooking the yard, you’ll want to have a viewing platform as part of the deck design.
4. Structure. Whatever layout you ultimately design, make sure that you don’t skimp on the framing and other structural components. This is especially important if you are expecting significant foot traffic or are planning on placing heavy furniture on the deck. Structural components will probably be the costliest parts of your deck, but it will help ensure years of reliable performance.
