What Causes Asphalt Shingles to Crack or Split?

Larry Walty II • August 5, 2022

The terms “cracking” and “splitting” are often used interchangeably in reference to a certain kind of damage to asphalt shingles. However, they are really two different things, and in this post, the residential and  commercial roofing contractors  at Larry Walty Roofing & Guttering Inc. explain the differences between two.

Cracking vs. Splitting

The main difference between splitting and cracking is that a split goes through the shingle while cracking is limited to the outer surface of the shingle. Split shingles are more noticeable from the ground because pieces may come loose and fall to the ground, exposing the moisture barriers underneath. It will also require urgent attention from your roofer because the damage can become worse the longer the underlying layers are exposed to the elements.

It doesn’t mean that you should put off  roof repair  if you have cracked asphalt shingles. While not as severe as split shingles, the cracks on the asphalt shingle surface expose the asphalt backing layer to UV radiation, resulting in slow but steady damage to the backing material.

Causes of Cracking and Splitting

Shingled roofs, whether made of asphalt shingles, wood shakes, or some other relatively light material, have edges that could be lifted by high-speed winds. On asphalt shingles, creases can form about an inch below the edge of the shingle above it, which, as described above, exposes the asphalt layer to UV damage. Asphalt shingles may also split if the wind is strong enough. Good asphalt shingles feature adhesive reinforcement at the edges that can help prevent wind lift. If your roof is up for replacement, consider investing in complete roofing systems with high wind resistance ratings.

Heat is another common cause of splitting and cracking. Since all substances, including asphalt shingles, expand and contract from changes in temperature, allowances must be made to prevent shingles from pressing against each other as they expand from heat. This is why asphalt shingles must be installed with gaps between them; otherwise, each piece would exert pressure upon the other, resulting in cracks when they revert to their original size. Cracks caused by incorrect installation may be covered by your roofer’s workmanship warranties, which means you’ll want to make sure that your roof’s coverage has it.
