Your Guide to Cleaning Windows in Fall

Larry Walty II • October 20, 2022

Fall has officially arrived with its jewel-toned leaves, crisp air and cooler nights. However, with all the dust and debris that has accumulated on your windows over the summer, natural light might be blocked from flooding your interior.

To help make the process of window cleaning easier for you this fall, follow these tips from experts.

  1. The best time to clean is on a cloudy day when it is not too hot or too cold. If it’s too hot outside, your cleaning solution might dry too quickly on the glass, creating ugly streaks.
  1. Instead of paper towels and newspapers, use clean microfiber cloths to wipe your windows. The inks and softening agents used in many paper products can transfer onto the glass when it gets wet, which can cause a hazy appearance on the surface.
  1. Remove the draperies from your windows. Wet a microfiber cloth and wipe them down.
  1. With the help of a soft bristle brush, clean the frames, tracks and screens of your windows. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with an extension hose to remove debris.
  1. Cover your window sills with a microfiber cloth so that excess water can be absorbed. Then, wipe the screens from top to bottom using a sponge and soapy water.
  1. The most effective way to clean glass is to use a glass cleaner that leaves no residue. Using cleaning products that contain soaps, scents and dyes will leave residues on your glass, which will then create streaks and attract dust and grime to the surface.
  1. Window cleaning must be done in an up-and-down or side-to-side motion, and you must work on the windows from the top down. Do not wipe the window glass in a circular motion because this can cause a static charge that will attract dust to the surface. It is very important to completely dry windows to prevent streaks and water marks from appearing.
