3 Causes of Rippling Asphalt Shingles

Larry Walty II • October 27, 2022

The more you understand what rippling asphalt shingles mean, the more you can prevent them from affecting your roofing system. There are several reasons why rippled shingles can lead to a bigger problem down the road, so it’s important to be able to recognize the problem and fix it before it gets worse.

Here are three common reasons why asphalt shingles look wavy.

1. Damp Underlayment

Roofing underlayment sits between the decking and asphalt shingles and helps keep the roof dry. If rainwater penetrates the shingles, the underlayment prevents moisture from entering your home. It is critical to ensure that the underlayment is completely dry before applying the shingles on top of it. Wet underlayment wrinkles and makes the roof appear wavy.

Most of the time, this problem will resolve itself with time and exposure to the sun. After a few days in the sun, the shingles will lay flat, and the wavy appearance will be gone. Even though it appears to be concerning right now, it will not last long and will soon pass. If the rippling persists after a few weeks, contact a reputable contractor to inspect your roof.

2. Roof Layover

You might be able to explain why your new roof appears wavy if it was installed on top of an old one. In most cases, this method of roof installation is not recommended since it might compromise the new materials of your roof in the long run. It will be necessary to reinstall the roof if this is the case.

3. Incorrect Shingle Placement

Precise craftsmanship is required when installing a roof. When shingles are installed incorrectly, it is immediately noticeable because the shingles don’t look even or uniform. A wavy roof can also be caused by improperly aligned shingles or incorrect measurements. In any case, it is imperative to find a reliable roofer to do the job correctly.
