Roof Vents: What Is It and What Does It Do?

Larry Walty II • August 17, 2021

Roof ventilation is a system that allows air to circulate through the attic. Ventilation is a key component in the building of a proper home. From the walls to the roof, this essential building block helps your home be what it is. However, you may be wondering just what makes roofing ventilation so important.

Let’s take a look at how the roof vents work. Larry Walty Roofing & Guttering Inc. a residential and  commercial roof repair  expert,   discusses why ventilation is important and how it protects homes when installed properly.

1. Temperature Regulation

The key purpose of ventilation throughout your home’s structure is to create the perfect amount of insulation against the elements. It also helps maintain the temperature within your home without overspending on energy.

Insulation helps keep the air temperature within a comfortable range and the air temperature outside of it from getting through and having too much influence on how comfortable you feel whenever you wake up every morning.

2. Ice Dam Prevention

Since hot air rises, an attic that isn’t properly ventilated will be warmer at the top and cooler at the bottom near the edges. This can lead to ice dams, which are sections of ice that form along the edges of a roof. Similar to regular dams, ice dams act as barriers that block melted water from flowing into your gutters and off your roof. The backed-up water can start to collect into a pool, seep into the shingles, and eventually drip through your roof and will soon cause further damage that may lead to  roof repair  or worst, roof replacement.

3. Limits Energy Loss

You might not be aware that roof vents at home also help you save or trim down your power usage. As the temperature outside your house increases, a properly vented roof will effectively allow the escape of the absorbed heat of your roofing material.

Thus, preventing it from transferring indoors and reducing the use of air conditioning units that will likely eat up more energy when your indoor temperature is similar to that of the outside environment.
