Roof Storm Damage: Filing Your Insurance Claim

Larry Walty II • August 27, 2020

Residential or  commercial roof repair is a common necessity after a strong weather event like a storm. Roof replacement is not out of the question for many property owners. This is the time when your insurance comes in handy. Navigate the insurance claims process with less hassle using these steps:

1. Inspect the Damage

Inspecting and assessing the damage is part of the first step. You can do a quick inspection after the storm when it’s safer to go out. Take pictures of any damage, leaks, destroyed items and anything relevant for documentation. Don’t go up to your roof, though. Do what you can from the ground for your safety. Call a professional to perform a more thorough inspection of your roof.

2. Call Your Insurance Company

Now you can call your insurance company to file your claim. Some insurers send a team to a storm-affected area to help clients file their claim and to speed up the process. Your insurer will give you further instructions. Make sure to follow them.

Don’t delay calling your insurer, as some companies limit the number of days you can file a claim.

3. Wait for the Insurance Adjuster

An adjuster from your insurance company will visit you as soon as possible to assess the damage and determine what is covered by your policy. They may also take some pictures and ask you a variety of questions.

4. Call Your Contractor

Residential and  commercial roofing contractors are ready to answer during and after a storm. Your contractor will come over to determine whether your roof is repairable or it needs to be replaced. They will give you an estimate, which you can also use as additional information for your insurance claim.

If you are satisfied with the estimate, including the choice of materials, your contractor will talk to you about the possible start date of the project. It’s common for local roofers to be extremely busy after a storm.

5. Rebuilding Begins

Expect your contractor to arrive on the date you both agreed upon. The severity of the damage, and the required repair or replacement, will determine how long the project will take to finish.

There shouldn’t be any surprises if the inspector did a good job. However, it’s not uncommon for a roofer to discover more damage than originally suspected. This might add to the time it would take to complete the project. You should inform your insurance adjuster about it.

6. Final Inspection

You and your contractor will inspect the finished project. Your contractor may give you some maintenance advice.
