Choosing a Roof That Performs Better Against Hail

Residential and commercial roofing contractors  will install the roof you prefer, but they are also fully capable of making suggestions based on the customer’s needs. Professionals are experts at deciding on the types of roofing material that suit the local climate. They understand the costs of replacement and repair better than anyone.

With that in mind, you can ask your roofer for suggestions, including the right roofing system that has a better chance of remaining intact under a hailstorm.

Why You Should Consider Hail When Choosing a Roof

While all roofing systems are manufactured to withstand the elements, hail is a different story. Any asphalt shingle roof is likely to survive under heavy rainfall and through the heat of summer, even a reasonable amount of snow every year. With some  roof repair  and regular maintenance, your asphalt shingle roof can reach its expected life span of up to 20 years.

When a hailstorm happens, however, it’s like your roof is being pelted with small rocks. Hail can knock asphalt shingle granules off your roof, reducing your roof’s protection from UV rays. In worse cases, hail can damage entire shingles. You might notice after the storm that some of your shingles are missing or damaged.

Without taking into account the impact of hail on your roof, you are likely to replace your roof sooner than you expected.

Roofing Material That’s Best for Surviving Hail

You can give your roof a better chance of enduring hail. Choose a roofing system with a rating of Class 3 or 4 in accordance with UL 2218 or FM4473 for resisting impact. The slope of your roof can also help. A slope of 6:12 (27 degrees) or a little higher has a better chance of warding off hail damage.

Asphalt shingles of good quality can perform moderately well against hailstorms if they are hand-nailed, with six nails per shingle. Applying a dab of roof cement under each tab can increase support.

Metal roofing is more suited against hail but may sustain permanent dimples. Metal lasts up to 20 years longer than asphalt shingles. Instead of exposed fasteners, your contractor should use corrosion-resistant clips or cleats.

The best slate roofs can handle hailstorms quite well but you have to make sure you’re getting that kind of tough slate. Not all structures can carry a slate roof, however, as it is as heavy as it is sturdy. Some slate roofs can last up to three times longer than shingles.
