Should You Paint Your Brick Exterior?

Larry Walty II • June 28, 2022

Painting your brick exterior can dramatically change the appearance of your home, giving it a fresh and on-trend look. But you also need to consider that exterior coatings can be somewhat permanent — and that is on top of it being a pretty time-consuming process.

So, should you paint your brick exterior? Here are the pros and cons to keep in mind.

PROS

  • It is easy to clean.  Like other masonry surfaces, brick is naturally porous and therefore absorbs dirt and other debris, making it a bit challenging to clean. When painted, its surface becomes less porous, a lot smoother and easier to clean when needed.
  • It boosts curb appeal.  Painting your brick exterior is a great way to enhance the curb appeal of your home. Since brick has no color limitations, you can select the palette you wholeheartedly want for your exterior.
  • It provides protection from elements.  Another excellent advantage to having your brick exterior painted is that it provides an additional layer of protection against precipitation and other weather conditions. This means the typical fading that plagues many brick surfaces can be notably slowed down.

CONS

  • It is permanent.  Once you paint your brick exterior, it needs to stay painted. You simply cannot go back to its original look. Plus, attempting to remove the color can be quite a costly procedure.
  • It can start to chip.  Moisture is generally an issue on painted surfaces, especially near the ground. To take care of this concern, you may need to repaint your brick exterior within five to seven years after the first application.
  • It requires frequent cleaning.  Although painted brick is a lot easier to clean than natural brick, it requires you to do it more frequently. The good thing is that you only need a simple power washing to keep it looking tidy.
