Why Do Windows Get Drafty?

Larry Walty II • May 13, 2021

Like other parts of your property installed by a home exterior and  commercial roof repair  pro, your windows are subjected to the elements and other external threats everyday, leading to eventual deterioration. There are different ways by which window damage can manifest and one of them is through drafts.

More specifically, windows get drafty over time because:

  • Glazing putty becomes brittle. When it falls away, windows rattle as drafts get through.
  • Wood window frames shrink. With age comes wear and tear that can cause window frames to shrink. No longer flush with their openings, windows then not only let in air from the outside but also allow heated indoor air to escape.
  • Weatherstripping and gaskets get worn out. With seals loosened, windows cease to be airtight, making way for drafts.

What You Can Do About Drafty Windows

  • If your window glass is relatively sound, you can focus on having just the damaged or worn-out parts of a unit repaired or replaced by a window and  roof repair  expert. This is a cost-effective move for homeowners looking to make the most of their windows.
  • If your window glass is broken, however, or you have damage on the window frame itself, your best bet is to do a replacement. Severe damage can be costly to remedy, making it more practical to get a new window instead. With a full replacement, you can be sure that all parts of a window are brand-new. With proper care, you can take advantage of what your windows have to offer for years.
