How can you tell if your windows have a leak? One warning sign you should keep an eye out for is condensation on the windows’ indoor glass panes. When moist air enters your home through drafty windows, moisture gathers and condenses into droplets on that window’s glass pane first. 

What about condensation forming on your windows’ outdoor glass panes? Should you be worried about that? The short answer is no. Condensation forming on your windows’ outdoor panels is a good sign, but condensation on the interior glass panes isn’t. That’s because the former is a sign energy-efficient windows are doing their job (which is to prevent heat transfer and insulate your home) while the latter is a sign you have drafty windows. 

Energy Savings and Lower Utility Bills 

According to the Department of Energy, heat gain and heat loss through windows are responsible for 25% to 30% of residential heating and cooling costs. This figure jumps to 40% if you have drafty windows. That’s why, in the long run, getting a window replacement saves you more money on your utility bills. 

Important note: keep in mind not all windows have the same level of energy efficiency. While looking for new windows, look for ones with an ENERGY STAR®label.
