Tips for Filing an Insurance Claim After a Hail Storm

Larry Walty II • September 30, 2021

Even a single hailstorm may cause a lot of damage to your roof if it occurs at the wrong time. Single impact pressures such as fists, feet, and baseball bats, for example, could dent, crack, or even shatter individual shingle tabs, which may allow for the presence of fragile underlayment underneath, resulting in leaks and damage to the roof assembly.

Commercial roofing contractors  are excellent resources for submitting an insurance claim after your house has been damaged by hail. There are, however, some things you’ll need to take care of.

What to Do When Filing a Hail Damage Claim

  1. Promptly file a claim.  Do not delay filing a claim after a storm. Certain insurance companies and policies have strict deadlines for filing claims. Also, after a storm, more evidence is available sooner. Note the date and method of filing the claim as soon as possible. Keep records of when and how the insurance provider reacted.
  2. Keep track of everything.  Keep track of all communications with insurers. Date, time, adjuster name, subjects discussed, and contact method. These records may contain information about how a hail damage claim was handled.
  3. Include all pertinent information about the damage.  This may include the date of the incident, images of the damage, and pre-damage photographs, among other things. These factors can be critical in determining the amount of damage and the required  roof repair.
  4. Attend the adjuster’s inspection on-site.  If the inspection has been set for a time when you will be unable, request a reschedule. Being there during the inspection enables you to observe the adjuster’s examination of the home and the amount of time (s)he spends investigating it.
  5. Recognize that you have the option of supplementing.  During the inspection, do not argue with an adjuster. Remain calm and remember that onsite disagreements rarely result in a change of opinion. Respectfully represent the damage, and remember that you can file a follow-up report. Provide as much evidence as you can in the supplement.
  6. Know what to do if a dispute emerges.  Consult a lawyer if unjustified delays, low offers, or other factors impede your hail damage claim. A hail damage attorney can help you understand your claim’s value protection options and pursue all legal remedies.
