Vinyl siding’s colors can remain vibrant for a long time despite not needing a lot of maintenance. But if you notice the colors becoming dull or want a different color, you can always paint your siding.
There are, however, a few things you need to take into account before painting vinyl siding. The commercial roofing contractors at Larry Walty Roofing list some of them below.
First off, painting your vinyl siding can void its warranty. Just to be on the safe side, check your warranty’s terms and conditions. And even if the manufacturer allows it, there may be restrictions on the type and color of the paint you can use.
Contractors and manufacturers alike strongly recommend choosing a lighter shade of color. This is because darker colors absorb more color. Parts of your vinyl siding may begin to warp if it absorbs too much heat. Not to mention increased heat absorption is likely to increase your cooling costs.
Heat absorption also plays a role in thermal expansion. Vinyl siding expands as the temperature rises and contracts as it decreases. Manufacturers have already taken this into account: vinyl siding moves back and forth slightly on overlapping seams. However, this means parts that haven’t been painted yet emerge during the cold months.
You also need to pick a type of paint that can accommodate thermal movements and will be able to stick to the siding. We recommend using paint containing acrylic and urethane resins.
Lastly, by painting your siding, you’re trading hassle-free maintenance for customization options. The colors from paint won’t last as long as the pigments that were baked into the siding panels.
Considering the many restrictions on your color choices, it may be better to just install new vinyl siding with a different color. Whether you need new siding installed or roof repair work done, it’s always a good idea to hire a certified and experienced contractor.
