Things That Can Affect How Well Your Asphalt Roof Ages

Asphalt shingles are still the most preferred roofing material for residential properties. They are known for their cost-effectiveness, stylishness and versatility. You can get them in various designs and colors, making this option ideal for most home styles. High-quality asphalt shingle roofing is also energy-efficient and designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Here are factors that can affect the life span of asphalt shingle roofs.

Product Quality

The quality of your shingles plays a significant role in the overall life span of your roof. Poor quality products will not last as long as top-grade shingles.

Your Local Climate

Where you live can also affect the longevity of your roof. If your area’s climate is harsh, your roof can have a shorter life span. Outdoor elements, such as sunlight, moisture and wind can all influence the aging process of roofing shingles.

Thermal Cycling

Temperature changes can cause roofing materials to expand and contract. Thermal cycling refers to the repeated movement of building materials. The more it occurs in your roof, the faster it will deteriorate.

Roof Slope

Water doesn’t shed as fast in low-slope and flat roofs, making them more susceptible to moisture-related damage. These roofs get more sunlight exposure as well.

Orientation

Thermal cycling usually occurs more in south-facing roof slopes. These slopes get more sunlight exposure as well, speeding up their deterioration. Prevailing winds can also hit some areas of your roof more than others.

Ventilation

Sufficient attic ventilation helps in extending the life of your roof. When warm, humid air fails to escape from your attic, its temperature will go higher. It can result in more frequent thermal cycling and premature roof aging.

Maintenance

Routine maintenance goes a long way in prolonging the life of your roof, no matter what material it’s made from. You should avoid delaying repairs because it will only worsen existing problems.
