Roof Restorations and What They Can Do for Flat Roofs

Low-sloped roofing systems are more exposed to UV rays, which is why they make a good candidate for a roof restoration. The commercial roofing contractors at Walty Roofing elaborate further below.

The Problem with Flat Roofs

UV rays can alter the composition of the roof’s surface, breaking it down molecule by molecule until it deteriorates. As mentioned earlier, flat roofing systems are more exposed to UV rays. However, UV damage can be exacerbated by a few factors. One of them is the color of your roof.

Darker colors absorb more solar heat, which can permeate through the lower portions of your home and raise your cooling costs. The amount of heat passing through your roof can also vary depending on the roofing material. A popular roofing material like asphalt, for example, absorbs more heat than a reflective kind of roofing material like metal.

How Can a Roof Restoration Solve This Problem?

The key to reducing UV damage is by using a reflective kind of material. However, this may not be the most cost-effective solution for homeowners, especially for those whose roofs are still in relatively good condition. In such cases, a roof restoration would be the better option.

Just to be clear, roof restorations won’t replace parts of your roof. Rather, they add new layers, specifically U-resistant roof coatings. These coatings reflect sunlight, protecting your roof from UV rays while lowering your cooling costs. With this added protection, the lifespans of roofing systems can be extended as well.

More Than Just UV Protection

As an added benefit, roof coatings can also protect your roof against leaks. Water tends to pond on a flat surface, increasing the risk of leaks. However, certain types of roofing coatings handle moisture better than others. To find out which type is the most suited to your home, consult an experienced contractor.

Whether you need a roof restoration or a roof repair , it’s always a good idea to check if a contractor has any certifications. These are proof a contractor not only has complied with the minimum requirements, but also underwent training to expand his expertise.
