Not a lot of people know what a soffit and fascia are unless they’ve already replaced their gutters or their roofs (or both). By then, they would know how important these two components are to the health of their entire roof and, by extension, their home.
And while many roof repair experts look at this gap in knowledge, some, like us at Larry Walty Roofing & Guttering Inc., are more than glad to enlighten homeowners on what these two components do. And most of all, why you should vent them.
The soffits protect the roof eaves; they’re part of the overhang of the roof and act as a “ceiling” that projects from the wall of the roof. They also keep the rafters free from the ravages of the elements. They come in either solid or vented panels.
You can probably see soffits with ventilation holes or slits cut into them. These are vented panels. These vents allow the circulation of air, which dries out the moisture that gets trapped in the attic or the roofing structure. During hot days, it helps cool the interior of the roof, preventing the harsh sunlight combined with the confined heat in the attic from cooking the roofing system from the inside.
In contrast to the soffits, which are horizontal coverings to the underside of a roof, the fascia is the vertical component that lines the edges of the roof. Residential and commercial roofing contractors describe the fascia as a contributor to the roofline’s look. It can also act as a “wall” to keep rain and moisture (as well as small critters) from getting inside the interior.
One of the most important roles of a fascia is that it supports the gutter system. This means it should be sturdy and durable. Still, ventilation is an important part of the fascia, whose benefits are similar to that of a soffit. Without ventilation, this component will succumb to moisture damage and dry rot.
Ventilation is only one of the things that we at Larry Walty Roofing & Guttering Inc. have years of expertise on.
