How Often Should You Repaint Your House?

Larry Walty II • January 24, 2020

There is no denying that getting your house repainted is one of the keys to preserving your property’s weather resistance and curb appeal. The question, however, is how often you should do it. Not overdoing it matters to avoid wasting your money and negatively impacting the environment unnecessarily.

Today, Larry Walty Roofing & Guttering Inc. answers the main questions to determine how frequently you should schedule house exterior painting projects.

What Is Your Siding Made of?

As with residential and  commercial roof repair  jobs, material should be your number one consideration when planning house exterior painting. Some siding products maintain their finish better than others.

Usually, wood needs the most TLC, requiring new paint every three to seven years. The finish on aluminum or stucco can last about five years while painted brick can go without a fresh coat for at least 15 years. Other newer materials can survive a minimum of 10 years before refinishing.

How Was the Previous Paint Job Done?

Like experienced  commercial roofing contractors , any honest exterior painters will admit that the quality of workmanship of the previous job dictates the longevity of the finish. The paint type, the paint color, the number of coats applied and the season when the project was done are critical factors to consider.

Generally, the paints that last the longest are those coated in at least two layers and in lighter colors.

Is There Any Weather Damage?

The harshness of the elements determines when a painting job is necessary as much as it does when a  roof repair  should be scheduled. It is imperative to assess the perimeter of your house exterior to check for peeling, cracking, and fading in order to evaluate the integrity of your current paint.
