Common Problems Areas of Roofing Systems

Larry Walty II • September 15, 2020

A roofing system can sustain a number of issues. One efficient way to keep your roof in good condition is to routinely inspect and maintain the most common trouble areas. Some of these roofing components can be fairly easy to repair on your own. However, the proper assessment of roofing systems requires a specific set of skills that residential or  commercial roofing contractors  provide.

Shingles

Shingles offer great protection from elements but are susceptible to discoloration and curling. Areas of missing or damaged shingles pose a threat to the components underneath, particularly the underlayment, leaving it vulnerable to rotting, holes, and other moisture-related damage.

Discoloration is a sign of a roof leak, which leaves stains on your ceiling and walls. Meanwhile, if your roofing system is not adequately ventilated, your shingles will likely buckle and curl at the edges. Make sure to check your system regularly so you can address small issues before they turn into something more detrimental.

Gutters

Gutters are designed to divert water away from the foundation of your home or building. They are susceptible to clogs due to debris buildup, preventing rainwater from flowing freely and uninterruptedly until it reaches a drain in the ground. According to a  commercial roof repair  contractor, the added weight of leaves, twigs and standing water can also cause your gutters to sag and pull away from the fascia. Call a professional to inspect your gutters before your property experiences overflow or flooding.

Flashing

Flashing is a thin strip of material used to seal vulnerable areas of the roof, including penetrations, walls, valleys, skylights, and drains. Its primary function is to close any gaps or voids on the roof surface where snow or rainwater may enter and cause leaks. Constant exposure to weather and oxidation are the main reasons for flashing deterioration, though it is also possible that the flashing simply became loose.

To replace your old flashing,  roof repair  experts will cut and form their own flashing or install preformed flashing pieces onto your roof.
