Attic Ventilation: What Every Homeowner Should Know About It

Larry Walty II • January 15, 2021

Did you know that attic vents are an integral part of any quality roofing system? Some of us aren’t aware that they exist while others don’t realize that their purpose goes beyond aesthetics.

If you’re unfamiliar with how attic ventilation works and how it impacts your life, as follows are the key things you must know about it.

Ice Dams Are a Product of Inadequate Attic Ventilation

Trusted residential and  commercial roofing contractors  will tell you that ice damming happens because of uneven roof temperature.

Without sufficient attic ventilation, the upper area of the roof becomes warm enough to melt the snow. And then the water refreezes upon reaching the colder section along the edges.

Snow can pose a threat to your roof whether it melts or not. But preventing the formation of ice dams at least makes snow a less dangerous and more manageable threat.

Attic Ventilation Doesn’t Directly Increasing Your Energy Costs

Any experienced residential and  commercial roof repair  specialist will confess that ventilation has no effect on your property’s indoor climate. If you have good insulation, you can keep your monthly energy bills to a minimum whether or not there’s proper airflow underneath your roof.

However, a poorly ventilated attic can damage insulation over time. The airtight space traps moisture, compromising the integrity of the insulating material.

In addition, HVAC equipment is not immune to moisture damage. When iron-containing components rust, they lose their strength.

Improper Attic Ventilation Encourages Mold Growth

Poor ventilation creates a damp environment, which can serve as a breeding ground for mold. If you fail to detect the problem and schedule a timely  roof repair , the allergen may colonize other parts of your house and harm anyone with a sensitive respiratory system.

If you can relate to any of these headaches or are not sure whether you have adequate ventilation in the attic, consult Larry Walty Roofing & Guttering Inc. We’d be happy to assess your roof and make sound recommendations should we find anything that should concern you.
